How the energy code has changed over time
The code keeps getting stricter — which means older homes fall further behind every few years.
Relatively modest attic insulation requirements. Air sealing was addressed but no mandatory blower door testing — it was essentially an optional checklist approach.
This was a big change. It required compliance with the air barrier installation checklist and added a mandatory blower door test for the first time — targeting 3 ACH50 for climate zones 3–8, and 5 ACH50 for zones 1–2. This is the one that really changed the game for air sealing in the industry.
Refinements rather than major overhauls. Some adjustments to duct insulation requirements and tightening of inspection language, but attic insulation R-values and the core air sealing framework stayed largely the same as 2012.
Significantly increased required attic R-values across the board — R-30 became R-38, R-38 became R-49, and R-49 became R-60. Air leakage maximums were also tightened, to 5.0 ACH50 under the performance path and 3.0 ACH50 under the prescriptive path.
